At a rally in Tempe, Arizona, less than two weeks before Election Day, former President Donald Trump sharply criticized U.S. border policies, calling the nation “like a garbage can” due to immigration practices. Trump accused the administration of enabling violent migrant gangs, saying, “We’re a dumping ground. We’re like a garbage can for the world.” Trump’s campaign has focused heavily on immigration, highlighting crimes committed by undocumented immigrants.

Despite Trump’s rhetoric, Border Patrol apprehensions in September were the lowest since President Joe Biden’s term began, with under 54,000 crossings reported. Trump repeated promises to end sanctuary cities, seek the death penalty for undocumented immigrants convicted of killing U.S. citizens, add 10,000 border patrol agents, and reinstate the “stay in Mexico” policy for asylum seekers, which the Biden administration ended.

Trump also criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, whom he called “stupid,” accusing her of opposing repatriation policies. Harris countered at a CNN town hall in Pennsylvania, advocating for legal immigration and highlighting her support for bipartisan funding, including $650 million for a border wall—a shift from her prior stance.

Arizona, an influential swing state, is seen as pivotal in the Trump-Harris contest, with recent polls showing Trump narrowly leading within the margin of error. Early voting in Arizona began earlier this month, with both candidates campaigning in the state.
