Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump said the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool may need to be drained again after problems emerged with peeling sealant, algae growth, and alleged vandalism following a multimillion-dollar renovation.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that “multiple individuals” had been arrested and claimed vandals cut a long gash into the pool lining and poured corrosive chemicals into the water. Federal authorities have not publicly provided details confirming the full scope of Trump’s claims.
Reuters reported that the pool recently underwent a roughly $14 million renovation that included painting the basin floor “American flag blue.” Soon after reopening, the water turned green from algae, and crews used hydrogen peroxide and nanobubble ozone technology to treat it.
Reuters also reported that peeling was visible on the pool floor less than two weeks after the renovation was completed. Experts said hydrogen peroxide can act as a paint stripper under some conditions, raising questions about whether cleanup efforts contributed to the damage.
Former Olympic canoeist David Hearn was arrested after touching a loose section of material at the pool. He denied vandalizing it and said the material was already peeling.
