Former President Donald Trump expressed his eagerness to debate Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting there is “an obligation” for nominees to engage in debates. Despite Harris not yet being the official Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, Trump committed to multiple debates, saying, “I would be willing to do more than one debate, absolutely,” during a press call.

Trump initially seemed hesitant to continue with a September debate planned with President Joe Biden after Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 race. The historic debate agreement between Biden and Trump removed debate organization from the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, which had managed such events for nearly 40 years. Both parties have since distanced themselves from the commission, with the Republican National Committee formally withdrawing in 2022. Harris’ campaign has yet to comment on the proposed debates.
