WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Saturday that he “loves women” while rejecting former President Barack Obama’s suggestion that governments might function better if women were put in charge for a period of time.
Obama said earlier this week that he had sometimes imagined placing women in charge of every government for two years to see whether conditions improved, adding that he believed they likely would.
Asked whether he agreed, Trump responded: “I love women, I think they’re great. But what a ridiculous statement that is.”
The exchange comes amid renewed attention to Trump’s repeated verbal attacks on female journalists. Mediaite columnist Ana Marie Cox recently highlighted his past insults toward reporters including Maggie Haberman, Rachel Scott, Nancy Cordes, Mary Bruce and Catherine Lucey. Trump has called Haberman “unattractive,” Scott a “horror show” and Cordes “stupid,” among other remarks.
Earlier this month, Trump also called CNN’s Kaitlan Collins “very dumb and unhappy,” and later objected to her presence at the United Nations, telling her CNN “should not be here” after his administration had barred the network from White House access.
Trump’s response to Obama did not address those previous remarks, instead framing the former president’s gender-based leadership argument as overly broad.
