WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Sunday that U.S. intelligence assessments no longer support Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claim that Ukraine launched a drone attack on his residence, reversing remarks Trump made late last month when he initially accepted the Russian leader’s account.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he now believes the alleged strike did not occur. He acknowledged that some form of incident happened nearby but said it was unrelated to Putin’s residence. Trump explained that his earlier reaction stemmed from limited information at the time and that Putin’s claim was the first report he had received.

At the end of December, Trump publicly expressed displeasure after Putin told him his residence had been attacked, calling the alleged incident “no good” during remarks at Mar-a-Lago. Russian officials later claimed that 91 Ukrainian drones were intercepted in Russia’s Novgorod region, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warning of retaliation. The Kremlin framed the incident as occurring amid fragile negotiations aimed at ending the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky consistently denied responsibility, calling the report a fabrication designed to justify further Russian attacks and derail diplomatic efforts. He warned that Russia has repeatedly used false narratives to rationalize military escalation, including previous strikes on Kyiv.
