Former President Donald Trump announced the retirement of his “DeSanctimonious” nickname for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, following DeSantis’ withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race and subsequent endorsement of Trump. This occurred just days before the New Hampshire primary, leaving former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley as Trump’s primary challenger.
Trump, during a New Hampshire campaign stop, confirmed he would no longer use the nickname, coined during the lead-up to the 2022 midterms amidst speculation of DeSantis challenging Trump. DeSantis had previously brushed off the nickname as “petty” and “juvenile.”
DeSantis, in his withdrawal announcement, emphasized his commitment to supporting the Republican nominee, criticizing the “old Republican guard” and expressing disapproval of Haley’s approach, labeling it as “warmed-over corporatism.” Trump expressed his appreciation for DeSantis’ endorsement, noting he was “very honored.”
