WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced Friday that longtime adviser Stephen Miller will become White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles in the administration’s first major personnel shakeup since Republicans lost control of Congress in the midterm elections.

Trump said Miller, currently deputy chief of staff for policy, will take over Monday. Wiles will move to Trump’s political operation rather than leave his orbit entirely. Trump praised both aides, calling Miller one of his most trusted advisers.

The move comes just three weeks after Trump publicly insisted there was “zero chance” he would replace Wiles and said she would remain “for a long time.”

Miller has been one of the administration’s most influential figures, particularly on immigration. He has played a central role in designing Trump’s mass-deportation strategy and has also been involved in planning how the White House could rely more heavily on executive authority once Democrats take control of Congress in January.

Republicans have been openly debating changes after their sweeping midterm defeat. Reuters reported that some GOP officials urged Trump to overhaul his staff and reconsider policies including the Iran war, tariffs and immigration enforcement.

Miller’s promotion suggests Trump is responding to the electoral setback not by moderating his agenda, but by elevating one of its principal architects.
