Washington, DC — A former Trump White House official is warning about the possibility of Stephen Miller becoming President Donald Trump’s next chief of staff amid renewed speculation about Susie Wiles’ future in the administration.
Sarah Matthews, who served as deputy White House press secretary during Trump’s first term, described the prospect of Miller taking over as “terrifying,” pointing to his outsized influence over the administration’s immigration and domestic policies.
Miller currently serves as deputy chief of staff for policy and has been one of Trump’s closest advisers since his first presidency. He has played a central role in developing the administration’s hard-line immigration agenda, including mass deportation efforts.
Reports last week said Trump had privately discussed possible replacements for Wiles, with Miller among several names being floated. Other reported possibilities included Bill Pulte, Lee Zeldin and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
Trump has publicly rejected the reports, saying there is “zero chance” he will replace Wiles and insisting she will remain chief of staff “for a long time.”
The speculation comes amid increased turmoil inside the White House ahead of the midterms, including the abrupt five-day tenure of press secretary Katie Zacharia and reports of growing internal competition for influence within Trump’s shrinking senior circle.
