President Donald Trump on Tuesday appeared to rule out deploying American forces to Ukraine, just one day after leaving the option open during meetings with President Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies.

“Well, you have my assurance,” Trump told Fox & Friends when asked whether U.S. troops would defend Ukraine’s borders. “I’m just trying to stop people from being killed.” He added that while European nations may consider sending soldiers, the U.S. could provide support “by air,” highlighting American military capabilities.

The remarks contrasted with comments Monday at the White House, when Trump had not dismissed the possibility of a peacekeeping presence as part of negotiations with Russia. “When it comes to security, there’s going to be a lot of help. It’s going to be good,” he said at the time.

Trump also disclosed he phoned Russian President Vladimir Putin privately after his meeting with Zelensky, saying it would have been “disrespectful” to do so in front of European leaders.

Peace efforts remain stalled over territorial disputes. Trump suggested Zelensky “has to show some flexibility,” though the Ukrainian leader insists no land will be ceded to Russia. “It’s possible that [Putin] doesn’t want to make a deal,” Trump acknowledged.
