President Donald Trump revealed Tuesday that he received a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which Ukraine expressed readiness to negotiate peace. Speaking during his joint address to Congress, Trump called the letter “important” and said, “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer.”
The letter comes amid efforts to repair strained U.S.-Ukraine relations following a tense Oval Office meeting last week, during which Trump halted military aid to Ukraine and accused Zelensky of being unprepared for peace. The fallout led to calls from some Trump allies for Zelensky to resign.
While Zelensky stopped short of apologizing, he called the meeting “regrettable” and reiterated Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate with Russia. Trump, quoting Zelensky’s letter, said Ukraine is ready to “work under President Trump’s strong leadership” and remains open to signing a rare earth minerals deal at a future date.
Trump did not comment on whether the U.S. would restore the deal.
