MIAMI, FLORIDA — President Donald Trump said the United States may not need to support NATO allies, citing frustration over their limited involvement in securing the Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Speaking at an investment forum, Trump criticized European allies for not providing material support as the U.S. approaches several weeks of military engagement tied to the Iran conflict. “Why would we be there for them if they’re not there for us?” Trump said, suggesting a shift in expectations around mutual defense commitments.

The remarks have renewed questions about the U.S. role in NATO, particularly regarding Article 5, which states that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. European allies had not been consulted prior to U.S. military action against Iran, and several countries have expressed opposition to the move.

While some nations, including Britain, France, and Germany, have indicated a willingness to contribute to maritime security efforts, no formal commitments have been made.

Trump has previously criticized NATO members over defense spending and burden-sharing, and his latest comments highlight ongoing tensions within the alliance.
