President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the United States would “take over the Gaza Strip” and oversee its redevelopment following more than 15 months of war between Israel and Hamas. Speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Trump suggested relocating nearly 2 million Palestinians to other countries, calling Gaza “a demolition site.”
“We’ll own it and be responsible,” Trump said. “We’ll level the site, remove unexploded bombs, and create economic development with unlimited jobs and housing.” He did not provide specifics on how the U.S. would assume control, though Netanyahu praised the idea as “something that can change history.”
Trump also ruled out Palestinians returning to Gaza after reconstruction. “Why would they want to return? The place has been hell,” he said. He proposed that neighboring Jordan and Egypt take in displaced Palestinians, an idea both nations have rejected as a security risk and violation of international law.
Arab leaders strongly oppose forced Palestinian displacement. Foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, and other countries sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, warning that resettlement would “threaten regional stability.”
Trump’s proposal comes as his administration oversees a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Netanyahu’s visit marked his first White House trip since Trump’s return to office, reaffirming their close alliance.
