President Donald Trump said Sunday his administration is developing a temporary pass system to allow migrant workers in agriculture and hospitality to remain employed, following confusion over enforcement pauses at farms and hotels. Speaking on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, Trump said farmers would be given “a little control” over the status of their longtime workers.
“When we go into a farm and take away people who’ve worked there for 15 or 20 years, you’re destroying the farmer,” Trump said. “We’re going to let the farmer sort of be in charge.”
The move comes after Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, clarified that worksite enforcement would continue “on a prioritized basis.” Trump had previously paused enforcement at farms and hotels amid backlash from key industries.
Trump said the proposed program would allow migrants to pay taxes and remain under employer oversight, emphasizing his dual commitment to “strong immigration” enforcement and farmer support.
“We can’t put the farms out of business,” he added.
