President Donald Trump on Sunday renewed calls for Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) to eliminate the Senate’s “blue slip” tradition, a longstanding practice allowing home-state senators to block judicial and U.S. attorney nominees.

Trump blasted the custom as an “old and outdated ‘custom’” that has enabled Democrats to stall his nominees. “I have a Constitutional Right to appoint Judges and U.S. Attorneys, but that RIGHT has been completely taken away from me in States that have just one Democrat United States Senator,” Trump posted on Truth Social. He urged Grassley to end the practice and tell Senate Democrats “to go to HELL.”

The president has criticized Grassley before, accusing him of looking “weak and ineffective” as Judiciary Committee chairman. Grassley has defended the tradition but previously exempted circuit court nominees in 2017.

Trump ally Alina Habba, whose nomination to be U.S. attorney in New Jersey has stalled, also faulted Grassley last week, calling his stance a “disservice.”
