President Donald Trump on Friday praised Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for agreeing to advance a Republican-led government funding bill, preventing a shutdown at midnight.
“Congratulations to Chuck Schumer for doing the right thing — Took ‘guts’ and courage!” Trump posted on Truth Social, calling it a “really good and smart move.”
Schumer’s decision to help break the filibuster has angered many Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who called it a “slap in the face” to voters. She warned of “a deep sense of outrage and betrayal” across the party.
Schumer defended his move, arguing that while the GOP bill is flawed, a shutdown would be far worse, potentially expanding Trump’s power. Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) echoed this concern, saying it is Congress’s duty to keep the government running.
House Democrats had pushed for a 30-day funding extension to allow further negotiations, but Senate Democrats remain divided.
