Donald Trump, Republican U.S. presidential candidate, applauded the New York police for their handling of pro-Palestinian student protests at Columbia University. He referred to the arrested protesters as “raging lunatics and Hamas sympathizers” and called for a crackdown on campus protests nationwide.
Trump’s comments came amid a wave of student protests against the war in Gaza across the U.S. He urged for the removal of encampments and the restoration of campuses for students seeking a safe learning environment.
The police response at Columbia has drawn criticism from some faculty members. The Columbia University Senate passed a resolution accusing the administration of undermining academic freedom by involving the police and suppressing protests.
Trump blamed President Joe Biden for the unrest, criticizing his administration’s potential move to relocate some Palestinian refugees related to Americans to the U.S. Trump, known for his hardline stance on immigration, stated, “Under no circumstances shall we bring thousands of refugees.”
Trump is currently campaigning in Wisconsin and Michigan, battleground states where he is locked in a close race with Biden. These rallies mark his first major campaign events since the start of his New York criminal trial.
