President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that the United States will resume nuclear testing in Gyeongju, South Korea, marking the first explosive tests since 1992. The order came just before Trump’s scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. “That process will begin immediately,” he wrote on Truth Social, citing recent Russian nuclear and missile tests as justification.

Trump said the U.S. possesses more nuclear weapons than Russia or China but warned that America’s rivals are “closing the gap.” He added that the move would ensure parity with other nuclear powers. The Pentagon confirmed it had received the order to begin preparations.

Experts, including Tom Nichols, a retired U.S. Naval War College professor, criticized Trump’s rationale and questioned the necessity of resuming tests. During his first term, Trump pushed for a major nuclear arsenal expansion, describing it as “a complete update and renovation of existing weapons.”

The announcement coincided with rising tensions in Asia as North Korea launched missiles ahead of Trump’s visit. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump downplayed the launches, saying, “He’s been launching missiles for decades, right?”
