President Donald Trump said Sunday that Washington, D.C.’s homeless population must “move out immediately,” promising relocation “far from the Capital” and previewing a Monday press conference on his plan to “stop violent crime.” He also hinted at ending the city’s home rule and potentially taking control of the Metropolitan Police Department.
The announcement follows a reported assault on a Department of Government Efficiency staffer that drew Trump’s attention. Federal law enforcement presence in D.C. has increased since Friday and could soon include the National Guard.
Trump said criminals “don’t have to move out” because they will be jailed. “There will be no ‘MR. NICE GUY.’ We want our Capital BACK,” he wrote.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser pushed back, warning National Guard deployment could alienate communities. She also disputed Trump’s claims of a violent crime surge, noting homicide rates are down 12% this year after a 31% drop in 2024.
