In a Monday interview, former President Donald Trump suggested that immigrants commit violent crimes because “it’s in their genes,” stating, “We got a lot of bad genes in our country right now.” His comments, made during a conversation with conservative host Hugh Hewitt, escalated his recent anti-immigrant rhetoric, echoing earlier statements about migrants “poisoning the blood of our country.” The White House condemned his remarks for resembling fascist and white supremacist rhetoric.
Trump’s rhetoric extended to Haitian migrants, with promises to end Temporary Protected Status, following baseless claims about them “eating pets” in Springfield, Ohio. This attention has led to bomb threats in local schools. Vice President Kamala Harris, targeted by Trump for her stance on immigration, called for an end to his rhetoric in a recent interview. A September poll showed Trump leading Harris 53% to 42% on the issue of immigration.
