Conservative activist Ed Martin, known for supporting Donald Trump’s claims of a stolen 2020 election and defending Jan. 6 rioters, has been nominated as the permanent U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C. Martin, who has held the role on an interim basis since Trump’s second inauguration, requires Senate confirmation.
Trump praised Martin on Truth Social, saying he has worked to restore “Law and Order” in the nation’s capital. Martin, a New Jersey native with a law degree from St. Louis University, previously led legal clinics for low-income residents and served as Missouri’s Republican Party chairman.
As interim U.S. attorney, Martin oversaw the dismissal of hundreds of Jan. 6 cases following Trump’s pardons and sentence commutations. He also launched a review of felony charges against rioters and pledged legal action against those obstructing Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
Martin, who led a “Stop the Steal” chant before the Capitol riot, later joined the Patriot Freedom Project, which supports Jan. 6 defendants. Critics argue his appointment serves political interests over public safety.
