President-elect Donald Trump announced the nomination of Dr. Mehmet Oz as the next administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Trump praised Oz as a “world-class communicator” and noted his prominence as a heart surgeon and advocate for healthy living.
Oz gained national recognition through appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show before launching The Dr. Oz Show. He later entered politics, narrowly losing a 2022 Senate race in Pennsylvania to John Fetterman.
If confirmed, Oz would work under Health and Human Services Secretary nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Trump stated Oz and Kennedy would tackle chronic disease and reform what he described as a “broken healthcare system.”
Despite his accomplishments, Oz has faced criticism for promoting questionable health products and advice on his show. A 2014 study in the British Medical Journal found that 15% of his medical recommendations contradicted scientific evidence.
