President Donald Trump announced Sunday that former Fox News personality and conservative podcaster Dan Bongino will serve as deputy FBI director, marking another unconventional pick for a key law enforcement role.
Bongino, a former New York police officer and Secret Service agent, is best known for The Dan Bongino Show, where he has promoted Trump’s false claims about the 2020 election. His appointment does not require Senate confirmation.
Now-FBI Director Kash Patel, a Trump loyalist who has criticized past FBI investigations into Trump, was confirmed last week despite opposition from Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME). Unlike past deputy directors, typically career FBI agents, Bongino’s selection underscores Trump’s efforts to reshape federal law enforcement.
Bongino has praised Patel’s leadership, calling his appointment a step toward “cleaning this place up.” His selection follows Trump’s controversial nominations of former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Pam Bondi for attorney general, with Gaetz withdrawing amid an ethics investigation.
