President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to nominate North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum for secretary of the interior. At an event in Florida, Trump praised Burgum, calling him “an incredible person” and adding, “He’s going to head the Department of Interior, and he’s going to be fantastic.”

Burgum, who did not confirm the news immediately, told reporters earlier, “There’ve been a lot of discussions about a lot of different things.” A spokesperson for Burgum said his team will comment after Trump’s formal announcement.

Burgum, a former software executive, sold his company to Microsoft for $1.1 billion in 2001 and served as a senior vice president at the tech giant. He became North Dakota’s governor in 2016 and won re-election in 2020. After a brief presidential campaign, Burgum dropped out in December 2023.

Burgum’s tenure ends in December 2024 when Rep. Kelly Armstrong succeeds him. Trump previously considered Burgum as a running mate before choosing JD Vance.
