Donald Trump met with Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys, over the weekend at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, according to a post from Tarrio on X. Tarrio, who was convicted of seditious conspiracy in connection to the January 6 Capitol attack, was recently pardoned by Trump after serving about three years of a 22-year sentence.
Tarrio described the encounter as an unexpected honor and said Trump called him and his mother over for a conversation during dinner. A senior administration official confirmed to The New York Times that Tarrio was invited by a guest and introduced to Trump in passing.
Tarrio wasn’t in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021, but prosecutors argued he coordinated the Proud Boys’ efforts remotely. His sentence was the longest handed down for a Capitol riot case. Trump has defended the sweeping clemency granted to roughly 1,500 individuals involved in the attack and has signaled openness to including members of groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers in political life.
