Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump unleashed a late-night barrage of social media posts focused on Greenland and global security just hours before departing for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, reviving an idea that many critics describe as reckless and detached from reality.

In a series of Truth Social posts, Trump alleged that he held a productive phone call with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and claimed there was broad agreement that Greenland is “imperative for National and World Security.” Those claims, like other statements from the Trump administration, remain unverified. Trump further alleged that meetings on Greenland were agreed to ahead of Davos, though no independent confirmation has been provided by NATO or European governments.

The posts included multiple altered or fictitious images portraying Greenland as a future U.S. territory, including one showing Trump holding an American flag on Greenland next to Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, alongside a sign reading “Greenland – US Territory EST. 2026.” Another image depicted Trump lecturing European leaders beside a map showing the U.S., Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela draped in the American flag.

Trump also lashed out at the United Kingdom, alleging it plans to give up Diego Garcia “for no reason,” calling the move an act of “GREAT STUPIDITY” and citing it as justification for why Greenland must be “acquired.” Those assertions were also made without evidence.

As Trump heads to Davos with the largest U.S. delegation on record, European officials are bracing for discussions dominated by Greenland, a proposal that critics increasingly characterize as the fixation of a madman rather than serious foreign policy.
