President Donald Trump publicly defended Tucker Carlson on Sunday as Carlson’s interview with far-right activist Nick Fuentes continued to intensify divisions inside the Republican Party. The interview, which featured Fuentes discussing topics ranging from nationalism to antisemitic rhetoric, sparked weeks of backlash from GOP figures who argued Carlson gave a platform to an extremist voice.
Trump, addressing the controversy for the first time, said Carlson “can interview who he wants,” adding that he found the former Fox News host “to be good” and appreciative of him. Trump said he did not “know much” about Fuentes but argued that viewers should decide for themselves. Fuentes responded on X with a message thanking the president and posted a clip of the remarks.
Republicans such as Sen. Ted Cruz sharply condemned Carlson for hosting Fuentes, calling the interview “cowardly” and “complicit.” Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro also criticized Carlson, while other voices in the party defended the interview. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said she admires Carlson for speaking with a wide range of guests, and Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts initially backed Carlson before later clarifying his condemnation of Fuentes’ antisemitic beliefs.
Trump reiterated he had not knowingly met Fuentes prior to their widely reported 2022 Mar-a-Lago dinner with Ye, saying the rapper brought Fuentes without his knowledge.
