President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he is considering a 10% tariff on China, citing concerns over fentanyl shipments to Mexico and Canada. The announcement comes after Trump recently softened his tone on immediate tariffs against China, Mexico, and Canada.
“We’re talking about a tariff of 10% on China… Probably February 1 is the date we’re looking at,” Trump told reporters. This aligns with his stated timeline for imposing tariffs on Mexico and Canada.
The mechanism for implementing such tariffs remains unclear. Normally, tariffs require a lengthy approval process, but Trump may invoke an economic emergency declaration to expedite the action—a method that has never been tested.
