Donald Trump on Wednesday described Xi Jinping as “VERY TOUGH” and “EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH” in a Truth Social post, despite claiming he’s “always liked” the China leader. His comments came as the White House sent letters to several trade partners, urging them to finalize deals while “reciprocal” tariffs remain paused.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the letters were friendly reminders that deadlines are approaching, but she didn’t specify which countries received them.

In April, the U.S. reached a deal with China to lower tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, while China dropped duties on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%. But last week, Trump accused Beijing of violating the agreement.

“I made a FAST DEAL with China… I didn’t want to see that happen,” Trump posted Friday, referencing potential economic fallout.

Trump’s approach has fluctuated between cooperation and confrontation. China has since accused the U.S. of provoking new economic frictions.
