LAS VEGAS, Nevada — President Donald Trump dismissed unfavorable economic polling as “fake” Wednesday while claiming the United States has “the greatest economy we’ve ever had by far.”

Trump made the remarks during a Las Vegas speech promoting Republican tax policies. His sweeping claim is unsupported by current economic data. Real gross domestic product grew at a modest 1.5% annualized rate during the second quarter, while inflation, elevated interest rates, housing shortages and energy costs continue pressuring households. The economy is not among the worst in American history, but it remains weak and unaffordable for many people despite strong financial markets.

A Reuters/Ipsos survey found Trump’s overall approval at 35%. Respondents preferred Democrats over Republicans on managing the economy by 37% to 36%, marking the Democrats’ first advantage on the issue in nearly a decade. Only 22% approved of Trump’s handling of household living costs in an earlier survey.

Trump rejected the findings without providing evidence that the surveys were fraudulent. He also claimed his actual polling numbers were the strongest of his career and credited tax cuts, foreign investment and border enforcement.

The divide between headline market performance and household finances helps explain the political problem. Rising stock values benefit investors, but many voters judge the economy through grocery bills, gasoline prices, rent, mortgage rates and healthcare costs.
