Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump sharply criticized the Supreme Court on Tuesday after the justices blocked his administration’s proposed mail-ballot restrictions from taking effect before the November midterm elections, calling the ruling a “big loss” for Republicans.
The court rejected the administration’s emergency request to allow the U.S. Postal Service to enforce new requirements for mail ballots. The proposed system would have required states to use standardized ballot envelopes and submit voter information through a federal portal. Election officials argued there was not enough time to make those changes before voting began.
Trump directed much of his criticism at the court’s conservative majority, including justices he appointed. He wrote that they were “not the people I interviewed” and had become “a shell of their original selves.” He praised dissenting Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas as “legends both.”
Justice Brett Kavanaugh agreed the restrictions should remain blocked for this election but indicated the government could ultimately prevail in later litigation. The underlying legal challenge is still unresolved.
Trump also used the lengthy Truth Social post to criticize the court’s rulings involving tariffs and birthright citizenship, claiming its decisions had caused severe economic and political damage. Reuters noted that the Supreme Court retains a 6-3 conservative majority and has also ruled in Trump’s favor on several major issues.
