Donald Trump said Saturday he hopes the country can heal after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, while blaming the “radical left” for obstructing unity.

“I’d like to see it heal,” Trump told NBC News in a phone interview. “But we’re dealing with a radical left group of lunatics, and they don’t play fair and they never did.”

Authorities identified 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah as the alleged gunman in Kirk’s killing at Utah Valley University. Gov. Spencer Cox (R) said Robinson had become “more political” before the attack and discussed Kirk’s campus visit with relatives. Cox also noted bullet casings at the scene bore inscribed messages. Robinson has no prior criminal record and is registered as an unaffiliated voter, according to the Associated Press.

House Freedom Caucus members have called for a select committee to investigate “the money, influence, and power behind the radical left’s assault on America.” Democrats, however, countered that Republican rhetoric has fueled political violence. Cox and other officials urged both sides to lower the temperature.

Trump escalated his remarks by linking Democratic donor George Soros to unrest, vowing to pursue RICO charges. Soros’ Open Society Foundations rejected the claim, stating it does not fund violent protests and remains committed to “human rights, justice, and democratic principles.”
