Washington, DC — President Donald Trump publicly attacked Rep. Ilhan Omar on Monday shortly after federal agents searched her Washington-area home, calling the Minnesota Democrat “totally crooked” and a “terrible person” while insisting he had nothing to do with the investigation.

“Well, I understand they’re looking at her very carefully,” Trump told reporters before departing for a campaign rally in Ohio. He said the matter was “really up to the DOJ.”

Homeland Security Investigations executed a court-authorized search warrant at Omar’s residence as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation involving immigration records completed by her late father when she was a child. Federal officials have not announced charges against Omar or publicly disclosed evidence showing she committed a crime.

Omar said she had “done nothing wrong” and accused the administration of using federal law enforcement to target a political opponent. Democratic congressional leaders have also questioned the timing of the search, which occurred roughly three weeks before the midterm elections.

Trump has repeatedly targeted Omar, who was born in Somalia and became a U.S. citizen as a teenager, with highly personal attacks involving her background and immigration history.

Despite denying involvement in Monday’s search, Trump again attacked Omar and Somalia while discussing the investigation later that day.
