Donald Trump announced a new trade agreement with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on Wednesday, days before his 90-day pause on “Liberation Day” tariffs is set to expire on July 9. In a Truth Social post, Trump said Vietnam agreed to a 20% tariff on goods and 40% on transshipped products entering the U.S., while granting “TOTAL ACCESS” for U.S. goods at zero tariffs.
Trump said the agreement was made following direct talks with General Secretary To Lam of Vietnam’s Communist Party. “Dealing with General Secretary To Lam… was an absolute pleasure,” he wrote.
The announcement comes amid rising pressure over the administration’s aggressive tariff strategy. Prior to the pause, Trump had proposed a 46% tariff on Vietnamese imports. In 2024, U.S.–Vietnam goods trade totaled nearly $150 billion.
The White House has not released further details. Trump also promoted U.S. SUVs as ideal for Vietnam’s market under the new deal.
