The Trump administration is seeking a $1 billion settlement with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) after freezing more than $550 million in research funding, a White House official confirmed to The Hill.

The proposal, first reported by CNN, includes installment payments and a $172 million fund for those impacted by civil rights violations. It would also impose policy changes: ending race-based scholarships, revising protest rules, barring transgender women from female sports and housing, halting gender-affirming care at the medical school, and handing over detailed admissions data. A resolution monitor would oversee compliance.

Funding to UCLA was paused earlier this year during a federal investigation into antisemitism on campus, leaving $584 million in awards suspended. Chancellor Julio Frenk warned the freeze could have devastating consequences for the university and national research efforts.

UCLA has indicated it will negotiate with the administration to restore funding and regain eligibility for new grants. Similar agreements have been reached with Columbia and Brown universities, which included large payouts and reforms to admissions and hiring practices.
