The incoming Trump administration intends to reintroduce family detention for migrant families with children, according to Tom Homan, the designated “border czar.” Speaking with The Washington Post, Homan confirmed plans to construct family detention facilities, with capacity determined by migration trends.
“We’re going to need to construct family facilities,” Homan stated, emphasizing that the number of beds required will depend on data.
This policy marks a departure from the Biden administration, which ended family detention in 2021. Under the new plan, detained families would face deportation together. In cases involving U.S. citizen children, families would choose to stay together or allow the child to remain in the country while the parents are deported.
Immigration advocates have criticized the move, warning of overcrowding and harm to children. The reintroduction of family detention aligns with Trump’s broader efforts to crack down on illegal immigration.
