The Trump administration, alongside Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), continues its large-scale reduction of the federal workforce. Through executive orders and budget cuts, agencies have been directed to shrink by 10%, with thousands of employees already terminated.

Federal Workforce Reduction Strategy

President Trump’s executive order mandates a hiring cap of one new employee for every four departures. Additionally, a buyout program offers employees continued pay and benefits until October if they voluntarily resign. As of Feb. 13, 77,000 workers accepted the buyout, though some reported being fired despite opting in.

Probationary employees, who lack full job protections, are the primary target. On Feb. 13, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) ordered agency heads to accelerate terminations. More than 200,000 probationary employees could be affected.

Layoffs by Department

  • Department of Defense – Layoffs expected soon as DOGE reviews personnel lists.
  • Health Agencies – 5,200 layoffs at NIH and CDC, including 89 FDA staffers.
  • Department of Energy – Up to 2,000 employees terminated.
  • Department of Education – Dozens of probationary employees dismissed.
  • Department of Veterans Affairs – 1,000+ layoffs, saving $98 million annually.
  • U.S. Forest Service – 3,400 employees cut.
  • Small Business Administration – Employees were fired, then reinstated, then fired again.
  • Office of Personnel Management – 100+ terminated.
  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – 73 employees dismissed, pending litigation.
  • National Nuclear Safety Administration – 300 of 1,800 employees fired, with some rehired.
  • General Services Administration – 100+ laid off.
  • Federal Aviation Administration – Hundreds of air traffic and radar technicians fired.

Political and Legal Backlash

Several Republican senators, including Lisa Murkowski and Bill Cassidy, criticized the layoffs, citing damage to national security and economic stability. Lawsuits are mounting against the administration, including challenges to Schedule F, a policy making it easier to fire federal employees.

Despite opposition, the administration insists the cuts will enhance government efficiency and reduce taxpayer burden.
