The Trump administration has stripped Harvard University of its ability to enroll international students, citing ties to antisemitism and the Chinese Communist Party. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Thursday that Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification has been revoked.

Thousands of international students must now transfer or face losing their legal status. International students made up 27% of Harvard’s 2024–25 enrollment. In response, Harvard called the decision unlawful and pledged to support its foreign students.

The move follows Harvard’s rejection of Trump administration demands to alter admissions, eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and share student visa data. The university also recently lost $3 billion in federal funding, with IRS threats to revoke its tax-exempt status.

Critics argue the crackdown undermines academic freedom, while Noem warned other universities to “get your act together.” A federal judge has temporarily blocked mass terminations of student visas and arrests.

Harvard is expected to challenge the DHS decision in court.
