Several of the country’s largest media outlets have called on President Biden to step aside and allow another Democrat to take on former President Trump in November, following the president’s concerning debate performance last week.
The New York Times: The Times editorial board suggested Biden should step aside to “serve his country,” agreeing with Biden on the threat Trump poses to democracy but asserting Biden is no longer the best candidate to defeat him. They criticized Biden’s performance and called his campaign a “reckless gamble,” while also condemning Trump’s debate performance for his repeated lies and refusal to accept election results .
The New Yorker: David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker, highlighted Biden’s declining communication abilities and described him as “increasingly unsteady.” Remnick argued that Biden stepping down would be an “act of patriotism,” and remaining the candidate would risk both his legacy and the election .
The Economist: The Economist reiterated its position from late 2022, calling Biden “befuddled and incoherent” during the debate. The publication urged Vice President Harris or other Democratic leaders to take the mantle, emphasizing that Biden’s performance confirmed fears about his fitness for office .
Chicago Tribune: The Tribune’s editorial board bluntly stated that Biden should announce he will be a single-term president. They criticized both Biden and Trump, describing them as “two gnarly old men,” and emphasized the necessity for Biden to recognize his limitations and step down .
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Journal-Constitution’s editorial board echoed similar sentiments, calling Biden’s debate performance a confirmation of his decline and urging him to pass the torch to a new Democratic leader .
Other Outlets: While not as direct, both The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal suggested that Biden stepping down should be considered for the good of the country and the party. Conversely, The Philadelphia Inquirer focused on Trump, urging him to step down due to his dangerous rhetoric and poor performance during his term .
