A Sunday morning service at CrossPointe Church in Wayne, Michigan, turned violent when a 31-year-old man drove his truck into the building and opened fire on the congregation. According to Wayne Police, the attacker was fatally shot by a church security guard.
The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m. and left one person with a gunshot wound to the leg. Senior Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. told The Detroit News that a churchgoer ran over the gunman with a vehicle, allowing the security guard to end the threat. “We felt like sitting ducks,” Kelly said, explaining the church hired a security team more than a decade ago due to rising violence against religious institutions.
Roughly 150 people, including many children, were attending a vacation Bible school service at the time. Witness Wendy Bodin told ClickOnDetroit she hid in a bathroom during the attack and praised the quick actions that ensured no further injuries.
The FBI is assisting local law enforcement in the investigation. Church leaders plan to meet with the congregation to address the emotional toll of the attack.
