Springfield Mayor Rob Rue, a Republican, expressed opposition to a potential visit from former President Trump, citing it would be “an extreme strain” on the city’s resources. The statement follows Trump’s false claims during a presidential debate, alleging that Haitian immigrants in Springfield were eating pets—a claim first made by Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) and debunked by local officials.

City Manager Bryan Heck noted that the controversy detracts from real efforts to support immigrants. Since the false claims, Springfield has received over 30 bomb threats, with state police now deployed to schools. Approximately 15,000 Haitian immigrants have arrived in the city of 60,000 in recent years.
