Edmundo Gonzalez, recognized by the White House as Venezuela’s president-elect despite Nicolas Maduro’s continued rule, announced Tuesday that his son-in-law, Rafael Tudares, was kidnapped in Caracas. Hooded men reportedly abducted Tudares while he was dropping off his children at school.
“This morning my son-in-law Rafael Tudares was kidnapped,” Gonzalez stated on X, detailing that a gold pickup truck was used in the abduction. Tudares’s wife, Mariana Gonzalez, described the incident as “persecution” against her family.
While no direct evidence implicates Maduro, the U.S. State Department condemned Maduro’s regime, accusing it of intimidating the opposition. Maduro’s government criticized Gonzalez’s meeting with President Joe Biden, calling it a violation of international law.
Gonzalez, in exile in Spain after winning the contested 2024 election, faces a $100,000 bounty issued by Maduro. Biden reaffirmed U.S. support for democratic change in Venezuela, urging respect for Gonzalez’s victory.
