President Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act on Sunday, increasing benefits for over 2.5 million retired Americans, including firefighters, police officers, and teachers. The law repeals the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which previously reduced Social Security payments for public pension holders and their families.
Despite bipartisan support, the $195 billion cost sparked last-minute Republican objections. The Senate passed the bill 76-20 on December 21, and the House approved it in November.
Biden, the first president in 20 years to expand Social Security, said the changes ensure Americans who “worked hard all their life” can retire with dignity. The law addresses decades-long advocacy for these reforms.
