The Social Security Administration (SSA) is preparing to lay off at least 7,000 employees, with workforce reductions potentially reaching 50%, according to sources familiar with the plans. The layoffs are part of the Trump administration’s push to shrink the federal workforce through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk.

It remains unclear how these cuts will impact 72.5 million Social Security recipients, but advocates warn that reduced staffing will mean longer wait times and office closures. Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works, called the plan an effort to “demolish” the agency, adding, “This will deny many Americans access to their hard-earned benefits.”

SSA’s acting commissioner, Leland Dudek, recently ordered a plan to eliminate half of the headquarters and regional office staff. Meanwhile, DOGE’s “Wall of Receipts” lists office closures across multiple states.

Concerns over DOGE’s role intensified after former SSA acting commissioner Michelle King resigned when the agency requested access to Social Security recipient information. Critics argue these moves will hurt seniors and rural communities the most.
