Snipers at Donald Trump’s rally on Saturday identified the suspect behind the assassination attempt before the shooting, according to CBS News’ Olivia Rinaldi. A local law enforcement officer with direct knowledge reported that three snipers were positioned inside the Butler, Pennsylvania building from which 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired at the former president.

A sniper first saw Crooks outside the building and later, using a rangefinder, near the building. Despite snipers alerting their command post, Crooks climbed the building and positioned himself above the snipers. Before additional officers could respond, a different Secret Service sniper killed Crooks.

The FBI is investigating how Crooks reached the vantage point to fire multiple shots, resulting in one death and two injuries. Local law enforcement, including Beaver County’s emergency services, reported Crooks’ suspicious behavior before the shooting. The incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. on Saturday.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas acknowledged a failure in security and announced an independent review. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle emphasized the agency’s commitment to preventing future incidents.
