Before shots rang out at Donald Trump’s Pennsylvania rally, police reported a suspicious man near the magnetometers. Witnesses pointed to an armed man on a nearby roof. When a police officer investigated, the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, pointed his rifle at him. A sniper later killed Crooks, but not before he fired, killing one attendee and injuring two.

President Joe Biden has ordered an independent investigation into the incident. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas called it a failure, pledging a thorough review. The investigation aims to understand how Crooks, with no military background, bypassed security.

Local law enforcement assisted the Secret Service and Pennsylvania State Police. Reports indicated Crooks acted suspiciously near the magnetometers. The officer who encountered Crooks fell and injured his ankle after the gunman pointed his rifle.

The FBI is treating the attack as potential domestic terrorism but has not identified a motive. The rifle used was likely purchased by Crooks’ father. The attack occurred from a distance within the range of a skilled marksman.
