A woman, identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, 36, was fatally shot by off-duty officers at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston after she entered the premises with an assault-style rifle marked with the word “Palestine.” The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, leaving her young son, approximately 5 years old, critically injured. Moreno, who had a history of at least six prior arrests, including charges related to unlawful weapon carrying and assault, claimed to have a bomb during the event, though no explosives were found after searching her vehicle. The shooting took place between services, at a time when attendees were gathering for the Spanish service.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner confirmed that two off-duty officers, one from the Houston Police Department and another an agent with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, responded to the threat by opening fire, resulting in Moreno’s death. The motives behind the shooting are under investigation, with authorities not ruling out terrorism or hate crime-related motives due to the inscription on the weapon.
Lakewood Church, known as one of the largest megachurches in the country with about 45,000 weekly attendees, was left in shock by the violence.
