President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Matt Gaetz as Attorney General has sparked skepticism among Senate Republicans, who are preparing for an intense confirmation process. Gaetz, a former congressman from Florida, resigned from the House shortly before the release of a House Ethics Committee report investigating allegations of sexual misconduct, drug use, and obstruction. Though the committee lost jurisdiction after his resignation, some senators are pushing for the report’s release, citing its relevance to his confirmation.
Trump’s choice of Gaetz surprised many, including GOP senators and Justice Department officials, due to his lack of legal experience, past scandals, and reputation as a divisive figure. Gaetz, who reportedly did not seek the role, accepted the offer after Trump personally asked him. Despite concerns, Republican senators have stopped short of outright rejecting the nomination.
Several senators, including Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), believe the Ethics Committee findings and FBI background checks will surface during the vetting process. Others, such as Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Sen.-elect John Curtis (R-UT), called for transparency regarding the ethics probe. Judiciary Committee member Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) vowed thorough questioning but rejected calls for subpoenas, while Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) deferred to the Judiciary staff’s vetting process.
Gaetz has begun lobbying GOP senators for support, but skepticism remains. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) called the nomination unserious, while Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) questioned Gaetz’s divisive actions in Congress, including his role in ousting former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Some senators are also concerned about spending political capital on a contentious nominee.
Gaetz’s confirmation will require a simple majority in the Senate, though a potential GOP win in Pennsylvania’s Senate recount could bolster his chances. If confirmed, Gaetz would oversee the Justice Department, a role requiring extensive bipartisan trust, which many lawmakers doubt he can secure.
