Senate Republicans blocked an effort by Democrats on Thursday to condemn the Trump administration’s vote against a United Nations resolution that blamed Russia for the war in Ukraine.
Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) attempted to pass the resolution via unanimous consent, but Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair James Risch (R-Idaho) objected without explanation.
“Let’s be clear on this: this is a war that Russia started. Ukraine did not ask for it,” Gallego said. “What happened at the U.N. puts us on the same side as Russia and North Korea. That’s not just embarrassing, it is dangerous.”
The Trump administration’s vote marked a major shift in U.S. foreign policy, as Trump seeks a deal to end the war. The decision drew international criticism, with Ukraine and its allies warning that it signals weakened American support.
Meanwhile, Trump softened his stance on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of Zelensky’s Friday visit to sign a critical minerals deal, which will deepen U.S.-Ukraine economic ties.
