WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senate Democrats have launched a coordinated effort to eliminate a controversial Justice Department fund created to compensate individuals who claim they were harmed by alleged government “weaponization,” setting up a new political battle between Congress and the Trump administration.
The fund, valued at approximately $1.8 billion, was established by the Justice Department following the settlement of President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over the leak of his tax records. Supporters argue the fund is intended to compensate Americans who were unfairly targeted by federal agencies, while critics contend it could benefit Trump allies and individuals involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Monday that Democrats plan to force votes on amendments aimed at blocking the program. Schumer said Democrats would continue efforts to prevent taxpayer funds from being used for payouts tied to Trump associates or Jan. 6 defendants.
The fund is also facing resistance from within the Republican Party. Reports indicate nearly half of Senate Republicans expressed concerns during a recent closed-door meeting with Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Some GOP lawmakers have reportedly demanded stricter oversight measures and limitations on who may qualify for compensation.
The controversy intensified after two federal judges temporarily halted implementation of the fund, citing concerns about potential fraud and eligibility standards. Questions remain about whether individuals convicted of assaulting police officers or participating in the Capitol riot could receive payments.
The future of the fund now appears uncertain as both congressional opposition and legal challenges continue to mount.
