The Senate confirmed former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia on a 50-45 vote, replacing Trump’s initial nominee Ed Martin Jr., whose nomination faced strong opposition.

Pirro, a former judge and Westchester County District Attorney, had been serving as acting U.S. Attorney since May. Before that, she co-hosted Fox News’ The Five, where she frequently interviewed President Donald Trump.

Trump withdrew Martin’s nomination after a Republican senator voiced concerns about Martin’s vocal support for January 6 rioters. Martin now serves as the Justice Department’s pardon attorney.

Pirro was previously named in a $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit by Smartmatic, which accused her and Fox News of promoting false claims about the 2020 election. Despite that, Senate Republicans advanced her nomination last month after Democrats walked out in protest of another judicial nominee.

Pirro brings decades of legal experience, including time as a trial judge and district attorney. Her appointment also follows Trump’s 2021 pardon of her ex-husband, Albert Pirro, who was convicted of conspiracy and tax evasion in 2000.
